Purpose of Around Vancouver Island
My goals in creating Around Vancouver Island (AVI) were threefold.
First, I wanted a project to help me better understand HTML and
the Internet. Second, I wanted to write a story and display some
photos that a select few might find humorous or entertaining.
Lastly, I wanted to write about my experiences sailing around
the island for the benefit of other sailors. I used the format
of a story to be a little different than your typical cruising
guide.
About the Story
I am not a writer. I skipped by my second year of high school
English so I could take Speech & Debate. As you can no doubt
tell, I am still paying the price. Please forgive all grammatical
errors. These pages were primarily written and then spell checked
in Microsoft Word. All documents were then saved as a text files.
To create the actual web pages, I edited the text files in Notepad
and inserted the necessary HTML tags.
Most of the content in this story is from the Patience logbook
and is primarily based on factual events that occurred during
the summers of 1995 and 1996. Some specific incidents are "enhanced"
for reader enjoyment. In addition, the order and timing of certain
events have been changed to make the story more cohesive. The
names of all the characters in AVI have been changed to protect
the innocent. My commentaries on various locales are factual,
but strictly based on my own opinion. The story itself is about
13,000 words long. I disclaim any liability
for loss or damage to persons or property which may occur as a
result of the use of or interpretation of information contained
in these pages. All text is copyright Tim Whelan 1996.
Photography
AVI contains about 40 images. In my opinion, the best images are in
the latter chapters. All photographs were taken with a Nikon N90s, Yashika F4 or a
Minolta Weathermatic. I used the following lenses on the Nikon:
Nikkor 20mm f2.8, Nikkor 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 and a Nikkor 75-300mm
f4.5 - 5.6. I really like the 20mm lens, but find the other two
lenses pretty mediocre. The Yashika F4 takes wonderful pictures
for a point and shoot (I subsequently lost it), but I am not very
impressed with the quality of the photos from the Minolta. The
Minolta is nice when things get wet though. The films I used were:
Kodak Gold 100, Kodak Gold 200, and some cheap Costco Kirkland
print films. I digitized all images by having Kodak Processing
scan the negatives to a Kodak Photo CD Masterdisk. All images
were cropped and slightly edited in Adobe Photoshop. Text in AVI
should download before images (to enhance usability) due to the use
of image height and width tags. All photographs are copyright Tim
Whelan 1995.
The Author, Me
My name is Tim Whelan. I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington.
I have spent most of my life around boats and have spent many
summers sailing or power boating in the God's Country (i.e. the
Pacific Northwest). I enjoy computers, photography and sailing.
My undergraduate degree is in Accounting and I am currently attending
the University of Washington's MBA program focusing on Entrepreneurship
and Marketing. I am excited to be getting married to my fiancée
Amy on March 22, 1997.
Many thanks to Amy & Barkely for your patience (no pun intended)
while I created this web page. Thanks to all of those who participated
in the voyages of the Patience during the summers of 1995
and 1996. You know who you are.
