Recommended Reading for Travels in Spain/Portugal

Fodor's Spain 2000
Fodor's (Editor)
Fodors Travel Pubns ©1999
ISBN: 0679003347
NON-FICTION
Fodor's publishes a well researched line of travel books. This book is particularly up-to-date. We successfully relied on Fodor's advice for hotels and restuarants in Madrid. All hotel reservatios were made using Fodor's. For those interested, Fodor's also publishes a specific book on Madrid. I didn't determine our specific itinerary early enough to avail of it, but it does exist. While Fodor's doesn't have many color pictures, their maps are accurate and they have good coverage of places to see, stay and eat.

Fodor's Portugal (4th Edition)
Fodor's (Editor)
Fodors Travel Pubns ©1999
ISBN: 0679000585
NON-FICTION
Similar in format and layout to "Fodor's Spain 2000", although not quite as up to date as the edition on Spain. Excellent, detailed advise on places to see, stay and eat. Again, lack of color photos a bit of a dissapointment.

Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides: Spain
Deni Bown
Dorling Kindersley ©1996
ISBN: 0789410680
NON-FICTION
We got both our Dorling Kindersley (DK) Travel Guides as a gift. At first I thought it was overkill and that we had too much reading material. Not so! The Dorling Kindersley guides were a nice compliment to the Fodor's guides. Where Fodor's are relatively dry and factual, the DK books are colorful both in prose and layout. The DK books don't have as much specific information on hotels/restaurants in them as Fodor's but they excel in other ways. The guides have fabulous pictures and maps that give you a feel for the various cities in ways that Fodor's can't.

Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides: Portugal
Martin Symington and Deni Bown
Dorling Kindersley ©1997
ISBN: 0789419483
NON-FICTION
Again, similar in format to the Spanish edition. Excellent guide. We fould it helpful to have both DK and Fodor's guides as they both have diferent levels of coverage on the less traveled areas. An alternative to buying both the DK and Fodor's books would be to buy books specifically addressing the area you are visiting.

Hugh Johnson's Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine 1999
Hugh Johnson
Simon & Schuster ©1998
ISBN: 0684848821
NON-FICTION
It is difficult to decide what wines to buy in places like Spain & Portugal. All of the brands and names are unfamilar. I found Hugh Johnson's Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine 1999 an excellent resource when wandering wine stores or grocery stores. The book is very small and easy to pack and has information on many wines in both countries (as well as many other countries in the world). This book is a good investment if you like wine and traveling and it will serve you well wherever you are.
