Text in Excel
Remember my rule that Excel is not a typwriter! If you find yourself
typing mostly letters and not numbers switch to Microsoft Word.
- Generally if you type alpha characters (a, b, c...) in Excel,
the program will recognize these as text. If for some reason you need
to "force" excel to enter text, enter an ' (apostrophe) and then the
text you want to enter. I.e:
'hello world!
Will display simply as:
hello world!
- If you need to format text you put in a cell, go to Format | Cells.
Among other things, you can format text within this dialog box.
This dialog will allow you to control both alignment and font
characteristics.

- Excel also has a formatting toolbar that makes many text-formatting chores
one-stop shopping. If the toolbar is not visible, you can always make it visible
by selecting View | Toolbars | Formatting.

- The Text Box tool is very good if you need to make notes or wrap text.
Any of the text formatting commands in Format | Cells or on the formatting
toolbar will work with text in a text box. You can also easily drag-n-drop
text boxes around at your leisure.
