About tgw.net...

TGW.NET is devoted primarily to sailing and photography. The site also has a few other miscellaneous items that I thought someone, somewhere, might find interesting. As of 11/99, I think the best material on the site is in the sailing section—specifically, Adventures in the Charlottes which is my latest and greatest photo–essay. Adventures is some 55,000 words long and contains over 150 high quality photographs. The story tells of our 1998 trip in the s/v Patience to the Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia.

Looking forward, I have just started to work on my next creation... Cruising Clayoquot. This photo–essay will chronicle our 1999 trip to Clayoquot Sound (West Coast of Vancouver Island). Look for that story in the first half of 2000.

The predecessor to tgw.net was created in 1996. That site was hosted on my complimentary University of  Washington “weber” student account. I wrote Around Vancouver Island during winter break 1996 and put up a few pictures up in early 1997. Then, in spring of 1997, web development came to a grinding halt when I ran out of disk space at the University. The site languished for about nine months until I finally found enough time to research a new provider. In 1998 I found a new long term provider and the site now has own domain name. This is where the site will be staying.

Most of what I have learned about web page development has been obtained by surfing around and looking at other sites. Two sites in particular were truly instrumental in helping me establish my site. The first one I would like to mention is the site(s) published by Philip Greenspun. Mr. Greenspun is a great photographer, an awesome web developer and pretty dang funny. His work and sense of style has inspired me greatly. The second site is one published by Selena Sol. Selena Sol’s pages were primarily responsible for helping me understand how CGI and perl works.

My name is Tim Whelan. I am the editor, publisher and photographer for tgw.net. I have been taking pictures since highschool and sailing since I was about 13. I don’t claim to be very good at either. I have been playing around with computers since my folks got us our first Apple II back in about 1978.

I like to write about and photograph the Pacific Northwest. I grew up around Puget Sound, mostly at a place called Three Tree Point. I spent many summers with my family in the San Juans & Gulf Islands. I am not a Canadian, but my mom is. I have some wonderful Canadian cousins who live in Victoria, British Columbia. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to experience a number of things-Canadian, with them. Feel free to email me.
